Use YouTube transcripts in Gemini CLI
One extension install gives Gemini CLI real YouTube access: read videos, research channels and track uploads from your terminal.

Install the extension
Run this in your shell. Gemini opens a Google sign-in the first time it uses a tool.
gemini extensions install https://github.com/pratie/bulktranscripts-mcpAsk Gemini CLI in plain words
Gemini CLI picks the right tool by itself. You never name one.

- Timestamps to re-watch each one
Step by step
Option 1 — the extension (recommended)
gemini extensions install https://github.com/pratie/bulktranscripts-mcpRun it in your shell, not inside a Gemini session. The extension registers the BulkTranscripts server; the first time a tool runs, a sign-in page opens. Continue with Google and the account includes 30 free credits.
Option 2 — add the server yourself
gemini mcp add --transport http bulktranscripts https://bulktranscripts.co/mcpOr add it to settings.json under mcpServers. To use a key instead of the sign-in, add a header:
{
"mcpServers": {
"bulktranscripts": {
"httpUrl": "https://bulktranscripts.co/mcp",
"headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" }
}
}
}Check it worked
Run gemini mcp list, or type /mcp in a session. If the sign-in expired, /mcp auth bulktranscripts opens it again.
Notes
Connecting the MCP server takes one sign-in — Google or a license key — and includes 30 free credits, no card needed. Buying a one-time credit pack gets you a license key that doubles as the API key; credits never expire and repeat reads from your own library are free.
Which setup fits you
All of them share one account, one credit balance and one library.
| Way in | How you connect | Sign-in | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Extension | gemini extensions install … | Google, in the browser | Most people; one command |
| gemini mcp add | --transport http | Google, in the browser | Choosing your own server name |
| settings.json | httpUrl plus a header | API key | Headless machines and CI |
What to ask Gemini CLI
Paste any of these once the server is connected.
“Read this keynote and list every announcement relevant to Android developers.”
“Find the best three tutorials on Firebase Genkit and write a quick-start guide.”
“Watch this migration video and apply the same changes to this project.”
“What did @GoogleDevelopers post this month? One line per video.”
“Turn this playlist into Markdown notes, one file per lesson.”
“Did the speaker say Gemini supports this? Quote the line and timestamp.”
Gemini CLI or the Gemini app?
Only the CLI can load third-party MCP servers today.
Gemini CLI
The open-source terminal agent. Supports extensions and remote MCP servers, so it can use BulkTranscripts directly.
Gemini app
The chat app at gemini.google.com. It does not load custom MCP servers; paste a transcript from the web app instead.

Questions about Gemini CLI
How do I add BulkTranscripts to Gemini CLI?
Run gemini extensions install https://github.com/pratie/bulktranscripts-mcp in your shell, or gemini mcp add --transport http bulktranscripts https://bulktranscripts.co/mcp. Gemini opens a Google sign-in the first time it uses a tool.
Can the Gemini app read YouTube transcripts through BulkTranscripts?
Not through MCP: the Gemini app does not load third-party MCP servers. Use Gemini CLI, or copy a transcript from the BulkTranscripts web app into the chat.
Is BulkTranscripts free to use in Gemini CLI?
You start with 30 free credits when you sign in with Google, no card needed. One credit fetches one new transcript. Reading a transcript that is already in your library is free, and checking a channel for new uploads is free. After that, one-time credit packs that never expire; there is no subscription.
Does every YouTube video have a transcript?
No. A transcript can only be fetched when the video has captions, either uploaded by the creator or generated by YouTube. Videos without captions are skipped and never charged.
Can Gemini CLI read a whole channel or playlist?
Yes. Ask for a channel or playlist and the server lists the videos, then fetches their transcripts. Large jobs of up to 1,000 videos run on the server in the background and report progress, so they survive a long conversation.
