Roundup

Best YouTube transcript tools in 2026

Ten tools that turn YouTube videos into text, grouped by who they are for: people who want files, developers who want an API, and AI agents that want an MCP server. One of them is ours; we say so, and we name the cases where another tool is the better pick.

Every price and limit below was read from the tool's own pricing or docs page on October 3, 2026 and links to it. Written by BulkTranscripts, which builds the first entry.

The tools

1. BulkTranscripts Web app + API + MCP

Best for: Whole channels and playlists, for people and for AI agents

Paste a channel, playlist or video link and get every available transcript as TXT, Markdown, SRT, VTT, CSV, JSON or one combined AI-ready file. The same engine is a REST API, a hosted MCP server with ten tools for Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and the rest, an agent skill, an n8n node and a Chrome extension. A transcript costs one credit the first time; reading it again is free. This is our product, so weigh the rest of the list with that in mind.

Cost: 30 free transcripts, no card. One-time packs from $4.99 for 200; credits never expire source

2. TranscriptAPI API + MCP

Best for: Developers who want the cheapest per-transcript API with search and listings

A developer-first API: transcripts, YouTube search, channel and playlist listings, a free new-uploads check and a hosted MCP server. No web app for non-coders and no file exports; you write the files. The closest rival to us on features, and on a plan it works out at about half a cent per transcript.

Cost: 100 free credits. $5 a month for 1,000 credits, top-ups $2.50 per 1,000; annual $54 a year with $1.50 top-ups source

3. Supadata API + MCP

Best for: Teams that need TikTok, Instagram, X and web pages as well as YouTube

Goes wide rather than deep: one API for YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, X, Facebook and general web scraping, with SDKs, Zapier, Make and n8n. It can also generate a transcript with AI when a video has no captions, at 2 credits a minute. Monthly subscription, so unused credits do not carry over.

Cost: Free: 100 credits a month. Basic $5 a month for 300, Pro $17 for 3,000, Mega $47 for 30,000 source

4. youtube-transcript.io Web app + API

Best for: Reading and chatting with one transcript at a time, with a watchlist

The most-linked single-video transcript site: paste a link, read the text, chat with it, keep a history. Bulk is marked experimental and metered per transcript. Good for a person at a desk, less so for an archive.

Cost: Free: 25 tokens a month. Plus $9.99 a month for 1,000 transcripts, Pro $24.99 for 3,000 source

5. NoteGPT Web app

Best for: Students who want summaries, mind maps and flashcards with the transcript

An AI study workspace whose YouTube transcript generator is the most searched in the category. The transcript page needs no login; the value is in what it does next: summaries, notes, mind maps, flashcards. Exports are copy or TXT. No developer access.

Cost: Free transcript page (daily quota not stated). Pro $9 a month, Unlimited $19.92, Max $69 source

6. Tactiq Web app

Best for: A quick free transcript of one video, no sign-up

Tactiq is a meeting-transcription product for Google Meet, Zoom and Teams that also runs a free one-video YouTube transcript page. No email, view or copy the text, download as TXT. The paid plans are for meetings, not YouTube.

Cost: YouTube page: free. Main product: Pro $8 per user a month billed annually ($12 monthly) source

7. Apify YouTube transcript actors Marketplace actors

Best for: Teams already on Apify who want transcripts in a dataset next to other scrapes

Several community-built scrapers. The most-used, pintostudio/youtube-transcript-scraper (25,000+ users), is one video per run at $10 per 1,000 results. karamelo/youtube-full-channel-transcripts-extractor crawls whole channels for $15 a month plus platform usage, with residential proxies billed on top. Output lands in an Apify dataset you export as JSON, CSV or Excel. Quality varies by actor; check the success rate on each listing.

Cost: Apify free plan has $5 of platform credit a month; actors from $5 per 1,000 transcripts or $15 a month rental, plus usage source

8. yt-dlp Open-source CLI

Best for: Developers who want raw caption files on their own machine, free

The standard open-source downloader. --write-auto-subs --skip-download --sub-langs en pulls caption files for a video, playlist or channel, and --convert-subs turns them into SRT or VTT. Needs Python 3.10+ and a terminal. The catch is YouTube's blocking: the project's FAQ says HTTP 429 means your IP is blocked, the wiki documents the PO-token enforcement and a guest limit of about 300 videos an hour, and running it from a server usually ends in "Sign in to confirm you're not a bot".

Cost: Free, open source source

9. youtube-transcript-api Python library

Best for: Python scripts that need one transcript, on a home or office network

pip install youtube-transcript-api and you have transcripts in a few lines, with SRT, WebVTT, JSON and text formatters and a language priority list. No channel or playlist support. Its README is blunt about cloud hosting: YouTube "has started blocking most IPs that are known to belong to cloud providers", so deployed code needs rotating residential proxies, which it integrates.

Cost: Free, open source (MIT) source

10. DownSub Web app

Best for: Grabbing one subtitle file from YouTube or 50+ other video sites

A free subtitle downloader that covers YouTube, Dailymotion, Viki and dozens of other sites. Paste a link, pick SRT, VTT or TXT and a language, download. No account, no bulk, no API.

Cost: Free source

Which one, for what

A whole channel or playlist, no code
BulkTranscripts. Paste the link, get a ZIP or one combined file. NoteGPT does playlist batches of up to 20 on its top plan; youtube-transcript.io's bulk page is marked experimental.
The cheapest API per transcript
TranscriptAPI on an annual plan, at $1.50 per 1,000 top-up credits. BulkTranscripts' one-time packs are close and never expire, which matters if your volume is uneven.
More platforms than YouTube
Supadata, which also covers TikTok, Instagram, X and web pages. Nobody else on this list does.
An AI agent in Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor
A hosted MCP server: BulkTranscripts (ten tools, bulk jobs) or TranscriptAPI or Supadata. Self-hosted libraries hit YouTube's cloud-IP blocking from an agent's sandbox.
Free, local and you can code
yt-dlp for channels and playlists, youtube-transcript-api for single videos in Python. Both break on cloud IPs.
One video, right now, no account
Tactiq's free page, DownSub or the BulkTranscripts web app; all three need no sign-up.

Questions

What is the best free YouTube transcript tool?

For one video, Tactiq's YouTube page, DownSub and the BulkTranscripts web app are all free with no account. For a whole channel for free, yt-dlp works if you can run a terminal and are not on a cloud IP; BulkTranscripts gives 30 free transcripts of a channel or playlist with nothing to install.

Which YouTube transcript API is cheapest?

TranscriptAPI, at $5 a month for 1,000 credits or $1.50 per 1,000 as an annual top-up. BulkTranscripts sells one-time packs from $4.99 for 200 up to $499 for 200,000 that never expire, so the cheaper option depends on whether your usage is steady or in bursts. Supadata starts at $5 a month for 300 credits.

Can I download transcripts for every video in a YouTube channel?

Yes. BulkTranscripts does it from a pasted link, up to 1,000 videos per job. yt-dlp does it from the command line. TranscriptAPI and Supadata list the channel through their APIs so your code can fetch each transcript. Apify has a channel-crawling actor.

Why do yt-dlp and youtube-transcript-api fail on a server?

YouTube blocks most cloud-provider IP ranges and now demands proof-of-origin tokens. yt-dlp's FAQ reports this as HTTP 429 and bot checks; youtube-transcript-api's README says cloud deployments will most likely hit IpBlocked. Both suggest residential proxies. Hosted services run that infrastructure for you.

Which tools work with Claude or ChatGPT?

Any tool with a hosted MCP server: BulkTranscripts, TranscriptAPI and Supadata. Connect the server URL once and the assistant can fetch transcripts itself. Tactiq's MCP is for meeting transcripts, not YouTube.

Does every YouTube video have a transcript?

No. A transcript needs a caption track, either uploaded by the creator or auto-generated by YouTube. Tools that only read captions skip videos without them; Supadata can generate a transcript from the audio for 2 credits a minute.
